Question about pirating

12 posts in this topic

I am not a pirate by any means. What I download off torrents and etc is stuff I preordered so I own it or stuff I own but too lazy to look through all my hundreds of CDs.

i recently downloaded the latest ep of South Park because my goddamn Hulu app on my Xbox wasn't working and my system needed a software update.

i got a letter from my cable provider threatening to cancel our service and told us we may be fined/taken to court by the owner of the material.

can someone please clarify what the law is? If I own the product can't I download it? Also if I own a subscription where I can watch something isn't it the same thing. I deleted the ep as soon as I watched it I don't see the big deal. I could of waited for the Xbox to update what's the difference. And fuck optimum are there any providers that don't monitor what I'm doing I'm already about to switch cause the lady was so ducking rude

You have rights to stream content on Hulu, but not to download the actual file. I've never heard of that threat letter happen w/ a TV show, though, typically it's just movies that can cause that based on their monitoring, but maybe they're cracking down more on that stuff. ISPs can easily track your torrent downloads whereas obviously streaming services are legit and they don't care about that. It's a risk you take when doing that. Usually it's three strikes so I assume you're safe if this is your first offense.

Thanks.

yeah I've never gotten a letter before and torrent a lot of files.

so if I own a movie on bluray for example can't I download the movie? And if they send me a letter isn't that like saying it's legal?

Can't download a torrent. Only legit downloads are the Blu-ray movies that legit come from the source w/ the codes in it. Anything you find on torrent sites isn't "legal" regardless if you own the physical disc. Use the disc. Not sure I understand your last question.

Ahh I think that's bullshit but I understand the reasoning.  The reason I don't use the discs is because I fall asleep a lot while watching movies. I can't sleep without the tv on and I don't have cable. So I put my movies on a USB drive and play them on my smart tv. I don't like falling asleep with my consoles on because I don't want them to overheat. Guess I won't be torrenting anymore that is really lame.

What are the odds I'm gonna get in trouble for the above incident lol

This is the absolute most important thing you need to remember when download a torrent...take that shit off utorrent the second it is done downloading. Don't let people download from you. That's how they get you. Once that download hits 100% you clear it from the program. I've never gotten a notice from Comcast but I'm always extremely paranoid about it. I believe there is a seven strike policy. You get seven warnings and then I don't know what happens after that. I never torrent movies. The movie industry doesn't fuck around with that. I heard they can track you easier with music. Not sure how true it is but just to be safe I only download music from music downloading sites and I never use torrents for that. I really only use torrents for TV and the occasional porno.

This is true too. I watch it and remove it as soon as it's done. You get in trouble for uploading to other people, not download.

Yes.

i never seed. I always delete it instantly from vuze. I still got the notice from a damn tv show. I feel like it depends on the network and show. I know my girlfriend downloaded an ep of game of thrones once and got the same letter a couple years back.

If your going to pirate look into RapidGator. It's a direct download and it's harder to get caught.

Yes I've used direct downloads I might just go that route from now on. I think it's ridiculous even if I own something I can't download it. #lame

To be fair from what I understand by purchasing it you're technically leasing the product, not buying it outright.
